抄録・概要
This study focuses on American singer Pete Seeger (1919-2014) and his political involvement with social issues through various musical activities. In addition to his lifelong work as a social activist, Seeger passed down the tradition of folk music and contributed to the folk music revival in the U.S. during the 1960s. Folk music in the U.S. developed especially through singing about discontent with society, and its main form of expression was the protest song. Seeger's musical activities, in terms of addressing social problems, ranged from involvement with the labor movement in the 1940s and the civil rights movement in the 1960s, to antinuclear, pacifist, and environmental issues in later years. The research question that this study addresses is as follows: How did Pete Seeger go about directing the various aspects of his musical activity toward his intention of contributing to the betterment of society? In order to seek an informed answer to this question, the three frameworks -singer, singing, songs-have been used as the vantage points from which to survey Seeger's long and illustrious career in music.
