抄録・概要
The government of modern Japan dispatched many consuls to China. My article considerstheir political role based on historical materials. Japanese government obtained many treaty rights from modern China. And it intended to preserve and expand its rights. I analyze its actual condition by making good use of historical materials possessed in many archives of mainland China. First, I analyze the quantity of "consul groups" and its distribution by regions. Secondly, I analyze their cultural and educational background and views on China. Thirdly, I analyze the contents and practice of the jurisdiction by consuls. Fourthly, I analyze the structure of mutual co-operation between "consul groups". My conclusion is that Japanese "consul groups" played very important roles for maintenance and expansion of unequal treaty between Japan and China.
