抄録・概要
（1）目的 : 本稿は、これまで筆者が行なってきたトンガの経済開発に関する「研究ノート」の一環であり、トンガにおける人口動態の特性をサーベイすることを目的にまとめたものである。（2）構成 : 本稿は、「トンガ人口の社会移動」と「国内の人口移動」そして「トンガに少子・高齢化は到来するのか」、以上3点を軸に構成した「研究ノート」である。（3）内容 : i）開発途上国の人口は、爆発的に増加している。では、途上国トンガはどうなのか。トンガの人口成長率は、島嶼諸国の中でも低い。20世紀後半最後の10年間（1986-96）は、ほとんど停滞状態で、成長率は年平均0.3%に過ぎない。その理由は何か。1999年の暫定的な統計数値から人口の自然増加率（crude natural rate of increase）求めると、1.93%である。この数字は必ずしも低い数値ではない。ii）なぜ、トンガの長期人口成長率（増加率）は、先進国並に低いのか。本稿では、この点についても考察を加えた。iii）1996年トンガの国勢調査を精査し、若干の主要な統計指標（Statistical Indicators）、例えば （1）トンガの合計特殊出生率（表12）、（2）普通出生率、（3）普通死亡率、（4）乳幼児死亡率、（5）移民率（移住率）、（7）自然人口増加率等にも言及した。（4）結び : おわりに、トンガも含めて島嶼国の開発課題は、「人口の経済」が作用しにくい点にあることを指摘し、これに言及した。
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the following points. It is also a part of my research on the economic development of the Kingdom of Tonga. Moreover, I would like to clarify the general characteristics of the country's "movement of population" and "economy of population". The population growth of Tonga is even lower than many other South Pacific countries. The country's population growth rate was almost standing still, and the average growth rate of the recent 10 years (1986-96) was 0.3%.0 What was the reason for this? The natural rate of increase (i.e. the crude natural rate of increase) in the country's provisional statistics in 1999 was 1.93%, which is not necessarily a low figure. Why then is the country's long-term population growth rate so low, the same level as advanced countries? This point is also analyzed in this paper. The main statistical indicators which were obtained from the census of Tonga in 1996 include the following, (1) Total Fertility Rate, (2) Infant Mortality Rate, (3) Crude Birth Rate, (4) Crude Death Rate, (5) Net Migration Rate, (6) Crude Natural Rate of Increase and (7) Long-term Population Growth Rate.
