Why Communicative Activities don't Work in the Classroom

抄録・概要
This paper argues that most of the language activities introduced by Communicative Language Teaching are still not sufficiently communicative. For in spite of the information gaps introduced to such activities, the students are not truly interested in finding them out. The tasks are also given by the teacher and are never initiated by the students. They feel that they are forced to do them and have no inner desire for communication. Many students also seem to feel that their roles and situations in role plays are unrealistic. The writer suggests that one possible way of improving the situation is to make use of an imaginative enhancement. Like actors who are given their roles and empathize with them so much that they almost believe them to be real, we guide the students to imagine the roles they play to be real. An activity of making the students focus on communicative purposes during classes and making them act out those purposes with the help of imagination is introduced. With activities like that, the writer believes that the students will be able to cope with real communication much more effectively.
