抄録・概要
In Japanese high schools, educands are assigned seating which is periodically rotated. Regardless of the class size, such assignment will start at the front row of the class, and work backwards as per the protocols in most Western countries too. In stark contrast to these accepted norms and etiquette, however, is the situation found and observed within the Japanese tertiary environment. In most Japanese tertiary classrooms, especially those classes facilitated by a Japanese national, the practice du jour is for Japanese students to sit as far away from the teacher as possible. Given that most university or college classrooms in Japan (certainly in older buildings) are quite large and could comfortably seat one-hundred students, and that average class numbers in Japan usually range somewhere between 15 - 30 students, the resultant void, or pedagogical dissonance which occurs is extremely noticeable and worthy of closer inspection. This is especially so because it also acts as a veritable communication decay, an almost rotten element at the core of the learning transaction, something which, the author argues, infects everything else that occurs in the learning environment. This research uses two frames to investigate and interpret this phenomenon as a means of both understanding the importance of classroom seating and offering guidance to practitioners. The first frame is drawn from molecular science and offers us help in comprehending the nature of molecular grouping and what ramifications this may have for various seating scenarios. The second frame is drawn from the field of structural engineering and, by applying that it allows us to interpret students’ seating in terms of strength and cohesion. As an exploratory piece of research this initial foray presents no quantitative data, however, findings from the above fields coupled with primary ethnographic data gathered in the field aim to offer recommendations for both improving the classroom environment, and also for further scholarship which may examine the effect of the seating/grouping styles noted herein.
